We all know about ‘junk food’.
Some of us call it fast food, some call it processed food, some say its greasy, fried food and some call it sugar.
The one thing we all know is that Junk Food is delicious. It stimulates the pleasure centers in our brain and sets up a cascade of resultant hormones.
Some of us have such a pleasant ‘trip’ on junk food that we have a very hard time putting it down, even when we are full to bursting!
The long term effects of junk food are even more disturbing!
Try hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, liver damage or stroke. This is not a pleasant side of junk food.
According to the CDC, somewhere between 20 and 40 percent of annual deaths are preventable! That is a HUGE number and it represents our loved ones.
Parents, siblings, friends and people from all areas of our lives are all strongly affected by the consequences of excessive junk food.
Short of legislation preventing the sale and distribution of junk food, there are not a lot of options.
One major hurdle in legislation would be to define junk food in a way that is accurate, credible and provable.
So, What The Heck is Junk Food?
As a health coach, I am confronted with helping my clients define what is and is not junk food every single day.
My first priority of defining so called ‘healthy food’ is always going to be nutrient density.
The plain fact of the matter is that it is not easy to get all the vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, fats and proteins we need each and every day.
Nutrient density is the most important factor in deciding what I will eat.
My second priority is toxins.
Yes, my body is a filtering machine and has many organs tasked with capturing and eliminating chemicals, synthetics, metabolic waste and excess minerals.
Sadly, these filtering systems can break down and their functions are not easy to replicate!
This causes me to try to choose organic, non GMO, hormone and antibiotic free animal products and produce.
I avoid shelf stable foods with ingredients I do not recognize.
This also includes artificial sweeteners which are purely chemicals with zero food value.
There is also some evidence that artificial sweeteners are toxic and cumulative in the body.
No thank you!
I also try to buy as local as possible because foreign countries have different quality laws and standards.
This is also my reason for searching out hard to find humane animal standards.
Stressed out, abused and crowded animals are sick.
Sick equals toxic.
The oldest rule in recorded history is to NEVER eat sick animals; or consume their milk.
The next priority is concentrates.
An occasional sweet treat is a pleasure, but concentrated sugar in the form of High fructose corn syrup can be both dangerous and pointless.
I cannot imaging a good reason to concentrate sugar; other then to make the product addicting in order to sell more units.
I want to enjoy my food, but I do not want to become addicted to it!
Overly or chemical processing of grains is another problem food for me.
Whole grains contain many useful nutrients, but after removing the husk and the germ and after the mill, all that is left is a finely ground powder which converts to glucose remarkably fast.
So fast does it turn to sugar that we get a hormone release that can quickly become…….addicting!
Another good practice is to buy VIRGIN, UNREFINED, COLD PRESSED cooking oils. I do not want to eat oils that are flavored, perfumed, chemicalized or rancid. Rancid means spoiled and I do not eat spoiled food.
So, there you have it. A reverse engineered description of Junk Food!
Junk food tastes good but interferes with your bodies need for nutrients.
It is highly addictive and can create disease and sickness in a body that has the ability to be strong and healthy.
