How many diets have you started, stalled, cheated on and finally quit?
I have been on more diets than I can count over the years and they all have one thing in common:
They made me miserable!
I have tried to live on 60 carbs or less daily.
I have counted every calorie and tried to stop eating at 800- 1000- 1200- 1500- 1800- 2000 calories. Yep, I did the math and over the course of a week adjusted my calorie limits daily in order to have more food.
I have tried eating cabbage soup, fruits and veggies only, zero bread and pasta, zero potatoes or starch and used a deck of cards to dole out my daily meals.
All of them ended up the same way. I was hungry; no starving, so I ate until I felt full again.
Sometimes that fullness took a week or more to achieve and left me with more weight than I started with!
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of diets available and they all tempt us into believing we will easily lose all our excess weight and never be hungry again.
I finally discovered the truth, after years of failure; years of believing that I was weak and pitiful.
Diets Do Not Work.
We live in a society that burns their products into our brains with constant bombardment of marketing sensationalism.
Every minute of every day we see slender models eating fast food and drinking sugary soda, with huge smiles.
They are usually engaged in activities with friends and are having a wonderful time!
They may be shown in family groups, everyone happy and well adjusted.
This is not real.
Humans have inhabited this planet for a very long time.
We have survived by hunting, fishing, farming and gathering food.
We have had to do physical labor, outdoors in any weather.
Rising with the sun in order to put up enough food to last the winter.
Teaching children to preserve meats and fruits and veggies in their separate seasons in order not to starve.
Many of us would starve to death if supermarkets disappeared.
Many of us are starving to death because of supermarkets.
There is little to zero nutrition inherent in processed foods, sugar, alcoholic beverages or fast food.
When our body needs fuel, it becomes hungry, that is how we know to eat.
Here is what actually works:
- Getting daily exercise
- Having a spiritual practice
- Enjoying a full and rich social and family life
- Having a career that is satisfying and fulfilling
- Healthy and mutually beneficial relationships
- Expressing ourselves through creative activities
- Being valued and respected
If any pieces of this puzzle are missing, we may suffer from spiritual or emotional hungerthat translates into dysfunctions of all kinds:
- Chronic overeating
- Inability to say ‘no’
- Food addictions
- Substance abuse
- Inappropriate behavior
- Dysfunctional relationships
The truth is, diets simply cover up the true problems with expensive solutions that cannot possibly address the real issues.
So, the next time you believe a diet might help you lose a few pounds, take a step back and ask yourself this question:
Is food really the problem?
